What is an SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification)?
SVQs are developed from National Occupational Standards that are based on typical job responsibilities within an industry.
SVQs are work-based qualifications that assess an individual's competence to do a job. Learners are judged by an Assessor on their ability to do their job, not on passing examinations. The Assessor uses a range of evidence sources such as observation, witness statements, work products and digitally recorded discussions, reducing the need for large portfolios of paper-based evidence.
The Modern Apprenticeship
The Modern Apprenticeship supports employers to develop employees with the range of skills and knowledge needed to work effectively within their business.
Modern Apprentices work on achieving a standard of competence in tasks associated with their job role and gaining confidence and interpersonal skills.
Modern Apprenticeships consist of an S/NVQ at level 2, 3 or 4, additional enhancement units from another S/NVQ and Workplace Core Skills at an appropriate level.
Work Place Core Skills
Core Skills are basic skills that will be assessed alongside the SVQs units and include:
- Communication
- IT
- Numeracy
- Problem Solving
- Working With Others
Required levels for the core skills are determined by the structure of the Modern Apprenticeship framework. Sometimes Learners have already completed the core skills at school and will not be required to be complete these again for the Modern Apprenticeship.
